Baqai Medical University, a private university established in the rural surroundings of Gadap. The university stands on a campus of 72 acres with buildup area of 7,27,374 sq.ft in seven blocks of buildings. Housing 13 institutions, shouldering the teaching responsibility of 1500 students, awarding 19 degrees and diplomas in various specialties. It directly and indirectly employs 1000 individuals in different capacities. It is the only university in Pakistan established on the theme of Community Based and Community Oriented Medical Education
Dr. and Mrs. F.U. Baqai, created Baqai Foundation and laid the foundation of Baqai Medical Complex on Super Highway. A rural health centre was established to serve the rural community.
Fahmi Health Education Centre was established in the Federal B- Area of urban Karachi. It is associated with European Union Education program, working as a center for community development.
Construction of Baqai Medical College was initiated.
After being affiliated with University of Karachi, Baqai Medical College inducted its first batch of students.
Pakistan Medical and Dental Council inspected and gave its formal recognition to Basic Medical College. The Council also permitted the college to start clinical teachings at Baqai Hospital, Nazimabad.
The year witnessed yet another landmark when the Department of Community Medicine of Baqai Medical College was upgraded to the level of the Institute of Health Sciences to award a Master of Public Health (MPH).
Subsequently, in 1993 the Department of Hematology was raised to the level of institute to award diploma in Hematology and M.Sc. Hematology.
Baqai Foundation established a project of Community Ophthalmology by the name of ’AL-NAZAR’’. Under this project medical eye camps are conducted for masses.
Baqai Institute of Oncology at Nazimabad was established. First of its kind in private sector.
The university witnessed the establishment of 250 bedded charitable hospital (Fatima Hospital) at the university campus for the community and teaching purposes.
Baqai Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetalogy at Nazimabad was inaugurated.
Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (BIPS) came into existence. It offers courses leading to D. Pharm, M.Phil and Ph.D.
Baqai Institute of Chest Diseases was inaugurated.
Through a bill passed unanimously in Sindh Assembly and the then Governor of Sindh, through a special notification promulgated an ordinance, called Baqai Medical University Act of 1996. By virtue of it Baqai Medical University came into existence.
The UGC – University Grants Commission (Presently HEC – Higher Education Commission) acknowledged Baqai Medical University (BMU) as an independent degree awarding university in its “Year Book” and “ Hand Book”.
A new leaf in education turned as Baqai Cadet College inducted its first batch of cadets.
Baqai Medical University established Post-Graduate Medical Institute .This is aimed to facilitate post-graduation in basic medical sciences.
The year witnessed yet another landmark, the ground breaking ceremony of “Gharo Project” (Baqai Kushal Nagar) providing medical care, primary education and an industrial home for poverty alleviation.
This centre is adopted as model by government of Sindh under Kushal Pakistan Programme for rest of Sindh.
In a progressive step ,Baqai Institute of Information Technology was established within the university campus .It is given degree awarding status.
The Baqai foundation went a step further when it created Baqai College of Veterinary Sciences.
The Baqai foundation went to Vinder (Balouchistan) to establish yet another project of “Baqai Model” under the auspice of the University. Soon in the year 2004, Baqai Institute of Ophthalmology will come into existence.
Baqai Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (Baqai Heart Hospital) came into existence. The centre provides most modern facilities to lower and middle class income group at most nominal rates.
Baqai Medical University was initially granted ordinance on 10 October 1993.
In May 1996, a bill unanimously passed by the Sindh Assembly was ascended to the then Governor of Sindh, who promulgated “Baqai Medical University Act 1996” on 16th May 1996.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) acknowledged Baqai Medical University (BMU) as an independent degree-awarding university in its “Year Book” and “Hand Book”, with a territorial jurisdiction of whole Pakistan
