The Psychiatric services at Baqai hospital Nazimabad started more than thirty years ago. It was (late) Professor Zaheer Khan who started psychiatric clinic at Baqai Hospital Nazimabad in nineteen seventy seven; than in 1979 Dr. Inam Rasool started regular Psychiatry OPD at the main building of Baqai Hospital and admissions in the medical ward. In 1983 Dr. Noorjehan Hussain started an indoor psychiatric unit, later on Dr. Inam ur Rehman and Dr. Amin Gadit worked as head of departments. Dr. Inam Rasool rejoined Baqai in January 1999 as head of Psychiatry Baqai Medical University.

In June 2000 the psychiatric unit at Baqai Hospital Nazimabad was given an autonomous status by the chairman Baqai foundation and its name was changed to Institute of Psychiatry Baqai Medical University and Dr. Inam Rasool was given the additional post of Director Institute of Psychiatry.

The department of psychiatry not only provides psychiatric facilities to the urban population, but also provides services to the rural areas around Karachi with a clear objective given by the Chairman Baqai Foundation To serve the humanity by providing health care facilities to common people.

The department of psychiatry, BMU, provides clinical services to the psychiatric patients at the following centers:

1. Institute of Psychiatry, Nazimabad

The institute of psychiatry is located in the Liaqutabad Town previously known as district central, close to the main building of Baqai University Hospital, Nazimabad- III Karachi.

The institute has a three story building with a covered area of about 5200 sq ft.. The Out Patient, seminar room and the pharmacy is on the first floor, male ward is on the second floor and female ward, library and rehabilitation centre on the third floor.


At the OPD, first a detailed history and complete medical examination is done by a resident then the consultant evaluates the cases and finally the psychologist do the counseling for every new case. The record of every patient is carefully maintained.

At the institute OPD works daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the consultants run clinics according to following schedule:

At he institute there are total 20 beds, twelve in the male ward and eight in the female ward. Both male and female wards are completely separate, male nursing staff looks after male patients and female staff looks after the female patients. In both the wards attendants are not allowed to stay with the patients because the hospital provides complete care including food and medicines.

In the ward after consultants round, patients are taken to occupational therapy centre to keep them busy in various occupational activities.

Electroconvulsive therapy is available at the institute, and used judiciously in cases of depression and schizophrenia. ECT is given after properly anaesthetizing the patient in the operation theatre.


The occupational therapy centre is there to keep patients busy during the day. The occupational therapist evaluate psychiatric patient and trains them in various skills according to need of the patient.


For the academic activities there is a seminar room at the institute of psychiatry having a seating capacity of 30-40 persons. The seminar room has Public address system, Overhead projector, Multimedia, and Flip chart            


News Paper: An Urdu news paper is available daily for the patients. 

Psychiatric books are available in the main library of the university, as well as at the institute of psychiatry, Nazimabad. There are more than hundred latest books available at the institute library on psychiatry, psychology sociology, and basic sciences.                                      

Journals like American Journal of Psychiatry, British journal of psychiatry, journal of Pakistan Medical Association, and CPSP of the last five years are available.           

Internet facilities are available at the main library and at the institute of psychiatry, BMU, Nazimabad. On line journals can be obtained from the main library of the Baqai Medical University.


Radiology department of the Baqai university hospital have facilities Plain X-rays, CT scans, and very soon the MRI facilities will be available.

Laboratory of Baqai university hospital work under the supervision of very senior professors and carry out all the routine and special investigations.

Collaboration with other departments

A close collaboration exists between institute of psychiatry and other departments of the Baqai University hospitals, especially with the Medical department, Neurology department, and Neurosurgical department.

2. Fatima Hospital, BMU, Gadap

Fatima hospital which is the main teaching hospital of Baqai medical college is located in Gadap town, on the main superhighway near tool plaza.

The department of psychiatry, Baqai medical university runs a psychiatric clinic here, six days a week and provides consultation and liaison services to other departments. Here patients who need hospitalization are presently admitted at the medical unit.

3. Psychiatry OPD at Baqai Medical Complex Gharoo

BMC Gharoo is located at 65 kilometers away from Karachi at the national highway. At this facility Department of psychiatry runs a psychiatric clinic on every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Here on every OPD psychiatrists examine 30-35 psychiatric patients and provide them necessary treatment free of cost.

4.  Psychiatry OPD at Baqai Medical Complex Khuda ki Basti

BMC Khuda ki Basti is located at end of Surjani Twon, around twenty kilometer from Karachi. The department of psychiatry, Baqai Medical University, runs a psychiatric clinic here on every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and provides consultation and necessary treatment to the patients free of cost. 

5.  Psychiatry OPD at Fahmi Health centre F. B Area

At this community health and education centre department of psychiatry, from January 2007 is running a psychiatric clinic once a week on every Tuesday where consultant psychiatrist examine cases on a very nominal charges.                  


The department of psychiatry, BMU, is responsible for teaching psychiatry to undergraduate and post graduate medical students.

The academic council of the Baqai Medical University has approved the curriculum of the Diploma in Psychological Medicine, which will be started soon after recognition from the PM&DC.

Presently following is the teaching program: 

  • Psychiatry lectures to final year MBBS students of Baqai Medical College.
  • Behavioral sciences lectures to second year students of Baqai Medical College
  • Psychiatry lectures to third year students of Diploma in Nursing at Baqai Nursing School
  • Behavioral sciences lectures to second year students of Diploma in Nursing at Baqai Nursing School
  • Psychiatry lectures to students of Diploma in Diabetology at the Baqai institute of diabetology and endocrinology

Presently following is the training program: 

  • Clinical training to fourth year MBBS students of Baqai Medical College
  • Training of the house officers in psychiatry/ rotation
  • Psychiatric Training of the postgraduate students of various disciplines
  • Seminars, workshops and lectures are frequently arranged for the training of general practitioners
  • CME workshops and lectures are organized for the training of psychiatrists.


Psychiatry is relatively a new discipline in medicine; just fifty years back psychiatry was limited to mental asylums. Though in the last few decades a lot of work has been done to increase the public awareness but still the Psychiatric patients are stigmatized and the general public have lot of misconceptions about psychiatric illness and treatments.

The department of psychiatry for the promotion of this discipline of medicine regularly organizes public health awareness programs and free medical camps. The faculty members and consultants of the department of psychiatry take part in TV programs and deliver public speeches at various forums.
